You waited for that seat sale at the strike of midnight, read a lot of travel blogs, revised your itinerary a dozen times, made a checklist on what to bring and what to do, and finally, the day has come for your vacation! When my family goes on vacation, we go all out. We allot our limited budget to try the local cuisine, visit the tourist and non-touristy attractions, and go on unique adventures and experiences just like hiking in Hong Kong.
Did you consider getting a travel insurance for your vacation? It didn’t cross my mind when Jeff and I were travelling with just the two of us. But things change especially when you’re traveling with kids. When we went to Bangkok before, I got a travel insurance for the whole family because our travel falls on a rainy season and part of our itinerary is going on a long drive to Ayutthaya, a city 80 kilometers north of Bangkok.
If budget is not a problem, then I would definitely suggest to get a travel insurance. But for budget travelers like us, we think twice if getting one will be worth it.
Here are the things to consider when getting a travel insurance:
You will go on a long distance travel, go to different countries or cities.
Long haul flights, layovers, long drives can be tiring and sometimes, some people catch a virus or illness at the airport or on the plane. You’ll be lucky if it’s just a minor one and you only need a paracetamol to feel well.
You will go on a food trip.
I am adventurous with food. I’d love to try out the local cuisine but sometimes, tummy problems might occur. You might need to go to a local hospital to seek medication when things get awry.
You will embark on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
If YOLO is your mantra and you’ll go sky diving, rock climbing, skiing, mountain climbing to your destination, a travel insurance will be great. It will give you peace of mind as well as your loved ones should anything happen to you.
If a medical emergency is serious, one might need to stay and undergo medical procedure in a hospital. But for some, they prefer to seek treatment from their family doctor and/or hospitals in the country. They might need medical repatriation using an ambulance jet or air jet. A medical staff will be with the patient throughout the flight to ensure his/her welfare and safety.
