Keeping your house clean can be challenging if you work full time. What more if you have young children to mess up the home with their toys, right? Even if they have their own room, you’d want it to be tidy to maintain orderliness and keep them safe from invisible germs. If only it’s easy to ask them to clean up after they play!

Every parent wants their kids to be good at tidying up their room. Kids, however, are experts in the opposite–scattering their toys everywhere. Here are some tips on how to teach your children to keep their room clean:
Teach them how to group things together
Every stuff in your kid’s room should have a place where it belongs. You need plastic containers or fabric drawers where your children can organize their toys. Even at a young age, your child can learn how to keep like things together in one box. This is a smart idea especially if you have more than one kid to train. It may even be a learning experience once you demonstrate how to do it and they try to follow you!
Implement a ‘one container at a time’ policy
You already have containers for similar stuff. The next thing to do is introduce this rule: your kids can only play with one container at a time. If they want to play with Legos, they can’t play with the other toys until they put the Legos back. It’s challenging at first if your child isn’t used to you having rules yet, but this will help them learn to follow the rules.
Establish a morning routine
What you do in the morning will be the foundation of your entire day. You can’t say this to your children outright, but you can teach them. They have to learn how to make their bed before leaving the room. This will be easy if your child is between 4 to 5 years old. Then, after they have taken a bath, teach them to put their clothes in the bin.
Implement a Cleanup Time at Night
After teaching your kids a new morning routine, the next thing to do is to implement a cleanup time before your family dinner. If you call them to the table and they come with their toys scattered on the floor, ask them to deal with it first. This is a better practice than delaying it until after dinner since that should be the time they get ready for bed.
Thirty minutes before dinner is enough for them to clean their room and even help you set the table. This is important, as it leads to the last step.
Tidy Up Once a Week Together
We’re done with morning and evening routines. Now, the last tip is to tidy up as a family once a week. Schedule a day when you’ll visit your children’s room and do at least a 5-minute tidying up with them. If they have missed any stuff throughout the week – say, a robot under the bed or a toy frog on top of their drawer– this is the time to clean those. If they are old enough to use a child-friendly vacuum, teach them how to operate it.
After the general cleaning, it is your duty to inspect if your children missed anything. It wouldn’t be long until they get used to your morning, evening, and weekly routine. They may even look forward to it if you promise ice cream as a reward!
There’s still hope in keeping your kids’ room clean – you just have to be patient and systematic. Some of the tips mentioned above can even be done in 15 minutes! Teaching your children to be disciplined can bring you closer and make you more fulfilled as a parent.
Teach them early to make life easier for both of you!
