Muscle pains, backaches, migraines, spasms? I’m sure most of us moms have experienced these kind of discomfort. I also go to the gym after work so it’s an added source of pain especially when my trainer gives me a new program. Even if it is uncomfortable, we just have to deal with it and just go on with our daily grind. For instance, I had this chronic pain on my left shoulder when I started breastfeeding to Gwen, so that’s already 5 years. Whenever there’s an opportunity for me to go to a spa, I’d indulge myself for a 60- or 90-minute deep tissue massage. I’d always tell my therapist to concentrate on my left shoulder because it’s the main reason why I always go to a spa. It turns out that I may not be getting the right treatment for my shoulder pain. Sometimes, a massage may also worsen your condition especially when your therapists are not properly trained. Massages are meant to relax the muscles but not treat the underlying conditions why you are experiencing pain in the first place.
This is what I learned when I visited Polarity Physiotherapy Center along Examiner Street in Quezon City. I heard about Polarity from my friends who are into fitness and are raving how they experienced relief after having Myofascial Release. I decided to give it a try since it’s near my office hoping that it will be the answer to my recurrent body pains.
I booked an appointment at 2 pm, it’s always best to call first and book an appointment since even if Polarity is fairly new, it has gained quite a number of returning patients. The Center is a renovated house, I like that it does not feel like a medical facility, more like a wellness center with a homey ambiance. I noticed that all the physiotherapists are fairly young, Hazel cheerfully greeted me and asked me to accomplish a form. It is important to answer the questionnaire as comprehensive as possible because it will help your therapist assess your medical condition. Hazel also took my BP before I was asked to go to the treatment room.
Polarity Physiotherapy Center has regular treatment rooms and 1 VIP room.
The VIP room has a LED TV and a private bathroom.
The assessment & treatment
Before treatment, I was asked to finish my glass of water to prep my body since myofascial release gets rid of the toxins and lactic acid build up. Hazel asked me to stand straight while she assessed my posture, she also checked on my hips. She said that I have a tilted pelvis, functional scoliosis, and tight muscles on my left shoulder. She then asked me to lie down and started stretching and gently kneading my pelvis/hips. It was very quick and pain-free. I asked her what could be the cause of my tilted pelvis and she said that it might be because of pregnancy and giving birth and also my posture. After my pelvis was aligned, she proceeded with my upper back. I was really surprised to learn that I have scoliosis, again posture is the culprit. Hazel applied pressure on my upper back, I felt a sudden crack or pop on her last pressure application. It’s not loud, I think it’s inaudible by a person beside you but Hazel was aware of that pop. She then asked me, “Did you feel it Mam?” She later on explained that she released the tight muscles along my spine. And finally, she dealt with my left shoulder pain through a Neck Myofascial Release.
I felt more discomfort when pressure was applied on my left shoulder compared with my right shoulder, which proves that muscles are really tight on the left.
Post-treatment
After the release, I should again drink a glass of water to aid in eliminating toxins. There’s a Treatment Information Card inside the room and it tells you what you might experience post-treatment. Some of these are muscle soreness, mild bruising, light headedness, mild headaches, loose stools, etc. I only experienced light headedness right after my treatment and that’s it. The persistent pain in left shoulder is gone for 3 weeks now, the longest time that I’m pain-free. I also told about my Myofascial Release session to my trainer at the gym, he’s been telling me that I have a muscular imbalance and my treatment at Polarity proved that.
My physiotherapist Hazel said that while you may feel relief right after the first session, Myofascial Release should be done at least twice a month to achieve optimum results.
