Motherhood changes you, I knew a lot of friends who went from happy-go-lucky into driven and focused individuals. More caring, more sensitive, more loving. Being a parent made me a more responsible adult, and that’s a good thing, right? I am not just looking after my own welfare but for my family as well.
I think it’s not fair when people invalidate other parents and tag them as OA over this 2019 novel coronavirus scare. OA na kung OA but I have a child and a family to protect. I understand fellow parents who are worried as hell like me whenever my daughter goes to school, too many what ifs… (baka tinanggal nya ang mask nya, baka hindi sya naghugas ng kamay, etc.)
A decade ago, news about H1N1 flu were reported in China. Sakto naman on our HK-Macau trip, pero hindi pa kami parents nun, kaming dalawa lang ni Jeff ang magta-travel. Despite the news, lakwatsa pa rin kami. Naalala ko pa we bought surgical masks in a shop in Mongkok, tapos ang kaagaw naming mga bumibili, fellow Pinoys :p. We went on with our trip kasi wala naman kaming inaalala, kung magkasakit kami, at least sarili lang namin ang affected.
But now that I am a parent, I am more worried for my child kesa sa sarili ko lalo na at younger children ang more likely na makakuha ng infection. Let me share my thoughts over this matter:
“Don’t panic. We have the facility and our doctors are prepared. “
I never doubted the capacity of our nurses and doctors, magagaling sila! Oo naman, they have the knowledge and the experience about infectious diseases. Kaya lang, what about our hospitals and medical facilities??? Can hospitals accommodate all patients should this disease gets out of hand? Isama mo yung bilang ng mga Chinese and Pinoys ha… I doubt… When there was a dengue outbreak, ang hirap na ngang humanap ng hospital para magpa-admit, sa nCov pa kaya which requires isolation.
“Don’t be a racist. No need for travel ban.”
Other countries have issued a travel ban, temporary travel ban lang naman. It is damn clear na majority of people who had travel history from Wuhan, China ang infected. It’s not rocket science to think of the solution when we know the source of the problem. And it’s not being racist, hindi lang naman mga Chinese, it also includes other nationalities who had travel history from Wuhan.
Asan na ang prevention is better than cure? When you are sick, the doctor needs to find out the cause right? Again, pag may dengue outbreak, we take the precautions to eradicate mosquitoes in our surroundings, may pa-4S pa ang DOH to search and destroy mosquitoes. With nCov, frequent handwashing nga lang ba talaga ang solution?
Now that I shared to you my piece, let’s just hope and pray for the better. Mabalik tayo sa H1N1 a decade ago, it caused quite a scare din before kasi nga new virus. Pero these days, parang ordinary flu na lang sya. I hope this coronavirus is not that severe and there will be a cure for this soon.
Meanwhile, keep calm, stay informed, and mask on.
